If I leave the tab open, the screen remains black. Note that the guest OS reports the wrong time when this occurs, the time advances much faster while the screen is black and when screen comes back, the guest time is many minutes in the future. I have a feeling it is related to wither the graphic card or driver but I have the latest driver and I have tried with a different graphic card. Also, I sometimes get the black screen without any video showing on screen.

I can see some of the video before it turns to a black screen. For instance, I have tried cnn. The video is NOT full screen. Sometimes there is no video at all and the screen goes black for a second and comes back to normal. Immediately after login for instance, this happens, of after thunderbird email program finishes downloading all my emails.

In those cases, screen goes black for about a second and comes back to normal. I have the latest updates on the host computer and very recent on the guest.

All drivers, including graphic card drivers are the most recent on the guest. I have tried with more then one VM.

I even created a new VM. They all have a similar problem. I have tried changing many settings, including the ‘enable 3D acceleration’ setting without success.

The host is a newly installed computers with only 2 important programs installed on a clean Windows 10 : VM-Ware, and LibreOffice. I have uninstalled workstation 16 and installed I’ve re-installed Note that I am not totally sure it’s the video that triggers the black screen but this seems by far the best way to trigger a black screen. I can use the VM to edit files or do other simple tasks for long periods without problem but as soon as I go on a webpage that shows a video, I get the black screen.

Note that “black screen” is only the guest screen that goes totally black. That includes the windows task bar and everything else. The host is totally normal. Both times it stayed black for about 3 seconds. The second time it went black, I continued writing to see if it would get the key pressed, and it worked. The text I typed while screen was black was recorded correctly. I then deactivated it but it may be related to this problem, I do not remember what I did to activate it so it’s not impossible that some part of it was not well deactivated, but I think it is.

I solved the problem myself so let me share the solution here for anyone else that has a similar problem. I have done two things but I am fairly sure I know which one solved the problem. I am including both things here in case I’m wrong as I have no intention of investigating more unless somebody needs to know.

The x CPU is fairly recent and needed a motherboard firmware upgrade and the firmware seems to change often. Going to bed now. Will let you know how I get on over the weekend. Thank you again for all your help. I am having a similar issue. I was running a 64 bit vmware workstation 12 player with no problems. I deleted the workstation 12 player and installed the workstation 14 player and then attempted to install ubuntu. The workstation 14 player installs successfully but i am only getting a black screen.

I can see and hear the familiar ubuntu drums so i believe ubuntu is being installed but am presented with a black screen. Yep, i’ts driving me crazy. I’m not too keen to start over as I feel this will only happen again. I never made any changes so just wondering if this has anything to do with my problems. I feel it’s important to mention that it was working just fine until I rebooted. Then I get the black screen on reboot there after.

Any ideas on how to fix would be much appreciated. Again, my virtual machine is running, however when i try to expand to console view it reverts to black screen. I never did an update. I went straight into Pro I’ve never had any other version of vmware installed before.

I did install vmware tools as I wanted full screen. Yes I did do windows update within vmware. Are you thinking I should remove all updates then try again? That was a reason I asked you to try another machine, however yes, you could try to remove the last updates, is known to cause issues, especially in VMs, it applies to and 10 alike.

So I’ve uninstalled all updates, it’s not made any difference. I think will try a fresh install at some point next week. My situation is quite similar but still different. I am facing a black screen too What i don’t know is: why?! When I power on or wake up my VM while I am connected to my companies network, I can see the VMware logo and loading screen for a very short moment before it blackens.

No workaround for black screens in the vmware player helped so far. In this state I can’t do anything using mouse or keyboard. What works is sending a ctrl alt del to the VM using the player My problem was caused by Zone alarm. Even after removing the program the problem wasn’t fixed. I had to request a clean remove tool from Zone alarm. After running the clean remove tool and rebooting my problems where fixed! You should make sure you have the latest version of Vmware tools installed.

Also like someone else suggested you may want to setup another VM to see if the issue is with the hyper visor or the virtual machine. That will help you narrow it down. Hey, so I had this exact issue. Not sure if this will fix for you, but I ran a repair on my Workstation Pro 14 installation and after restarting from the repair my VMs now properly draw to the main frame in the application.

I just had the same issue while running NordVPN software. This topic has been locked by an administrator and is no longer open for commenting. To continue this discussion, please ask a new question.

What are some good computer repair type questions to ask a user just starting in the field out of HS. Hi Guys – hope you’re all keeping safe and well! Thanks again. Spice 4 Reply If you are already using Windows 10 as your base, it might be cleaner and free to use the built in Hyper-V – Workstation is a type 2 hypervisor, Hyper-V is type 1, bare metal and as I noted is also free flag Report.

Works just the same as VMware, but you don’t have to buy it. I am a huge VMware fan and my lab runs ESXi, however at work for simplicity and learning I run Hyper-V I also run it on my lab, nested, but I use it a lot less than I do at work christopherriddell wrote: Wow, thank you for the quick reply.

I would have replied quicker except you are new here, so your post went in to moderation. What is the spec of your physical device, and what virtual CPU and ram have you allocated to the guest – restrained resources can cause a black screen as it tries to allocate enough to the guest flag Report. Verify your account to enable IT peers to see that you are a professional. What an odd amount of ram to give your guest. Since you are only testing this I would give it 1 vCPU and 4GB ram, virtual machines work better with less sounds ironic, but trust me flag Report.

Thanks again all. What video ram have you given the guest?

Imported Win XP Mode from VirtualPC, black screen – VMware Technology Network VMTN.

I have successfully installed Windows 10 within the virtual PC and a few other programs. Everything seemed to be going just fine until all of a sudden, I was faced with a black screen within Vmware. I have noticed that there is suddenly, a thumbnail bar at the bottom which seems to show my virtual PC powering on and off.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Vmware 4 times now without it making any difference. Is there any advice you can offer with regards to what the problem may be?

I guess worst-case scenario is I would need to reinstall Windows 10 within Vmware, however this will take a fair bit of time and I still would not be aware of what I did that caused the problem in the first place.

If you are already using Windows 10 as your base, it might be cleaner and free to use the built in Hyper-V – Workstation is a type 2 hypervisor, Hyper-V is type 1, bare metal and as I noted is also free. Wow, thank you for the quick reply. No, it’s definitely not paused or suspended. You can see the virtual PC running within the thumbnail. Soon as I click the thumbnail to make large screen it goes black. My host OS is Windows I’m using the free version of VMware but I have already purchased a license key.

I got so sick of uninstalling then reinstall then typing in the license key, was just easier to click free trial.

I’ve never heard of Hyper-V before. You wont be able to use both however, if one is installed the other will be unhappy, so pick one and stick with it. VMware tends to have more features, however you are unlikely to use most if you only have a simple requirement to test before install. What is the spec of your physical device, and what virtual CPU and ram have you allocated to the guest – restrained resources can cause a black screen as it tries to allocate enough to the guest.

For reference, please note the post above, both VMware and Hyper-V will not work together, you will need to uninstall one to run the other. The icon fourth from the left, blue on the bottom, white on the top will turn off your thumbnail bar. Latest video drivers for your host? What was the last thing you installed in the Windows 10 VM? You didn’t install video drivers in the VM did you? I have posted my problems on VMware’s own site and they haven’t replied.

One again thank you for helping me with this issue. Just to be clear I did have VMware working at one point. For now at least it is VMware I would like to stick with. Since you are only testing this I would give it 1 vCPU and 4GB ram, virtual machines work better with less sounds ironic, but trust me. I’m running Windows 10 Pro Build I’m not sure what the last program installed was, sorry. I did not install video drivers, but did install some Windows updates.

I will follow the steps set out in the link you just gave me to see if this will work. That’s not made any difference. Anymore ideas please? Yes I can get into safe mode, it’s not easy though.

The screen size is small and I cannot see the mouse cursor. It’s a guessing game where about it is on the page and everything is really slow. No, I mean it is really slow when not in safe mode. I have already removed the driver, still did not work. I have also tried to restore but have no restore points saved. Not really. My worry with starting over is this could happen again and I would still be none the wiser as to the cause of the problem.

Can you build another VM alongside this one and see how it behaves, lets rule out an issue with the VM itself. I see your point with Hyper -V. I’ve already paid a fair bit for VMware. I would at least like to spend a little more time on it before I give up. I will try installing again tomorrow.
